Has MLB.tv Finally Fixed Their Web Player?

For people who want to stream sports on their computers and devices, baseball fans have it pretty great. MLB.tv was really the first of the big four sports to offer live game streaming via the web, and the progress made by MLB Advanced Media has been strong, if not without its problems. It can be buggy, it can be laggy, but it allows us to watch baseball online with a reasonable success rate. But with all the advancements made for mobile viewing, simple web-based viewing has seemed to take a step backward.

Beyond my work here, I also occasionally contribute baseball writing to our sister site FanGraphs. In some cases, I’m looking to capture a GIF of a certain pitcher or a certain play. I know how to capture and convert the video — I’ve become fairly quick at it over the past few years. But actually finding the video can be troublesome thanks to the jenky way MLB streams games over web browsers.

In the past, MLB used a plugin called NexDef. I’m not privy to the reasons why this particular plugin was utilized, but I can say that it was crappy and unreliable. But it was needed for more advanced features like the live DVR capabilities and the switching of audio commentary. The biggest problem that I had with NexDef is that it very rarely recognized that it actually existed on my computer. It would constantly ask me to reinstall. Constantly. On both Mac and PC. Support was limited to a few sets of instructions on how to remove and (again) reinstall NexDef, but I don’t recall that ever solving the problem.

Last year, MLB.tv seemed to offer a NexDef-less way to view on the web. This was a welcome change, but more issues seemed to arise. Primarily, the time coding seemed to be all over the place. Say I wanted to grab a clip of Giancarlo Stanton hitting a double. I would look up the game logs and find out that he hit one in the bottom of the fifth inning. I would pull up the game online, and use the web player to switch to the fifth inning. I would not end up there. More often than not, the video would display that the game was about to start. Sometimes it would take me to the first or second inning. Sometimes it would thank me for watching, as the game had already ended. This left me to use the scrubber and the score bug on the video to try and find my way to the fifth inning. It was a long and stupid process.

But 2015 is a new year, and with it, MLB is promising a better version of its streaming service. Among the new features is the ability to watch Spring Training games via mobile and connected devices and the ability to sync Spanish-language broadcast audio. But they also list “web-based HD media player” as a new feature. Maybe there is such a thing as Santa Claus. If I can finally watch an MLB game online without wanting to punch my laptop, the 2015 season is already off to a great start. Heck, maybe my Astros will make a run at the postseason. Well, baby steps, I suppose.

I realize that the way I want to use MLB.tv is different from most everybody else. Still, if a product offers me the ability to jump between innings and batters, it should, you know, actually do that. I’m a baseball nerd, and I will probably always buy MLB.tv, warts and all. But if minor tech issues are turning away more casual fans, that becomes a problem. Readers of this site probably have the wherewithal to follow instructions on removing plugins. The average user does not. If MLB has fixed the tech problems that have plagues the site for years, we might finally have the perfect sports-streaming solution. Well, they’d also have to address the blackout rules. But that’s a different post, isn’t it?

Crazy, I never had those problems with NexDef.
I’m hoping they actually upgrade their mobile platforms. Watching the same game in a computer and a phone, the phone is always 5+ seconds behind. The same goes for computers if you DON’T have Silverlight installed (Correct me if I’m wrong, but NexDef runs off Silverlight, right?), It will also be a few seconds behind similar to phone/ipad.

Silverlight thus drastically raises the speed and reliability of live streams, but it hasn’t been ported to mobile devices. Will they find another way? I hope so. I probably watch 150 Royals on my phone and the other 12 on a computer.

(The same is also true for devices such as AppleTV and Xbox One — stays seconds behind computers with Silverlight..)

Your only non-fangraphs link isn’t working.

MLBAM has been very aggressive in establishing infrastructure for streaming all that video – as evidenced by the clients that now stream using their backend (ESPN, CBS’s March Madness on Demand, HBO GO ect). Good to see they are at least interested in getting their front end working well, the removal of NexDef last year was a good step in that direction and hopefully they’ll make more progress next year. Most live sports video front end implementations I’ve seen are pretty disastrous – watching the NFL games on NBC and Fox’s websites on a laptop connected to a TV via HDMI led to the very frustrating double letterboxes. Definitely a ways to go before those experiences live up to their potential.

What I wanted from this year’s MLB.tv is radio synced with the audio. My favorite team is the Brewers and thus, I get the privilege of listening to Bob Uecker. However, even though the terms of service claimed it was an option, watching the game and listening to Uecker on MLB.tv was not an option. If I wanted to do so I would be forced to open a second window with the MLB audio feed and mute my MLB.tv. This would not be synced up. Hopefully listening to the radio and watching the game will be possible this year!

Actually, I was getting the option to sync radio and video later in the season. Although frustratingly, sometimes the stream would reload and the option would mysteriously disappear. Still, the option exists, sometimes.

Interesting. I hope it works this year then.

The audio sync is actually a make-or-break feature for me. My team is bad, but I would probably be willing to spend the money this year even so if I could have the game experience I want (and that they advertise). The laginess and complete failure to deliver video/radio sync on any devices I’m interested in using (Apple TV, PS4, possibly Mac laptop) make it an easy choice to not buy MLB.tv.

I’m a Braves fan and love their radio guys, but despise their TV broadcasters. When I would watch games through my Roku, I would be able to sync the radio broadcast with the video. However, this was never an option for me on my phone or laptop. I hope they correct all of these issues, because this is a great option when it works.

Genuinely curious: Is the way WWE Network streamed using a different method from MLB.TV from last year? Both are made by MLBAM, so I am curious.

But the big problem with MLB.TV is problems with the apps IMO and being very very inconsistent.

My biggest problem was buffering during the games. It was very inconsistent, sometimes a game would stream fine. Sometimes it would be fine for a few innings, then start to crap out in the 6th inning.

Mobile always seemed to do better; TV (via DVD player) seemed to have most problems. PC was hit or miss.

Other streaming services (such as Netflix and Amazon) run perfectly. And I have plenty of bandwidth.

Go Braves!

One of the advantages of living outside the U.S. is “NO BLACKOUTS”!
but I do think guys in the U.S. must be so frustrated. Hopefully, blackouts will go away soon.

I’ve had all the same problems, and more (like just randomly re-starting the broadcasts, especially during live broadcasts) And based on watching mlb.tv for some spring games this year, and already wanting to punch my laptop. I can tell you, it seems no better.

NexDef was the only thing that made me KEEP my subscription. Using that plug-in was the only consistent way I could get a game to stream using a proxy to bypass any blackouts. I had great results but only if I could control the quality of the stream. I would have to start the stream at the lowest quality then slowly increase the definition till I could watch the game in full HD in a few minutes.

Laptop works fine for a few innings, then craps out. never ending circles then craps out. Try to get in to many times and locks you out and cust service is no help.

I find it interesting that MLB never addresses the defects. At least this season, if I want, I can go back to use the old method of viewing, the old player. The HD is actually better with the new player, but the game won’t advance from inning to inning using the new player. At the end of every half inning, it goes back to the beginning of the game. I wish they would acknowledge that it’s buggy.

i can skip to innings using the new streaming …
but even tho they say i should be able to advance batter by batter …
i can’t see how to do so.
anyone?

Agreed. I am in Australia and I have crazy fast www speeds that work just fine for the NBA, NHL and NFL (which streams at 45000Kbps just fine) but the Bases package has constant crashes. I installed NextDef but still no dice on the live DVR (which I used to have access to and now don’t which is odd). I installed the MLBTV and that buffers too. The new in browser player barely works so I use the old media player and have better success, though it still crashes if I try and change innings on an on demand game.

I tried contacting the support folks but it is the same malarkey advice of ‘clearing caches’ and ‘cookies cookies cookies’ but as another mentioned, they never admit that their product is flawed and inadequate.

PoorForm

Many thank you very littles MLB TV
